respectful chicken harvest part 1 of 2 kill and pluck - how to Video

Alexia Allen of Hawthorn Farm is a wilderness skills instructor who also has a small farm in Woodinville, Washington. I thought she did a really good job of demonstrating a respectful harvest of a chicken.

I thought about trying to squeeze everything into a five minute video and decided instead to edit out very little. So there are two parts. This part is ten minutes and focused on killing the chicken and plucking the feathers from the chicken. Part 2 will be about separating the tasty parts from the not so tasty parts: butchering. (twelve minutes)

Alexia has many approaches to her philosophies about harvesting animals:

"I usually like wearing pink when I do my butchering. It makes me the angel of death. I have come to this process of killing animals with this sense of being almost a midwife? Or at least when I teach people about butchering chickens I want to emphasize It's not about being brutal or macho, it's really about 'hey, you kill things and eat them.' That's part of how the world seems to work. I didn't make up how the world works. It just seems to be what needs to happen whether it is a chicken or a carrot. It's just a vertabrate bias that might make a chicken seem different than a carrot."

I have to give this ...
I have to give this lady credit for being able to do this. I have been thinking of raising chickens for? eggs and then their meat. But I don't think I can kill them, I don't know why. It's just too heart breaking for me. She has bigger balls than I do!

WONDERFUL JOB!! How do you save the feathers for a bed...do you save them in a cloth bag and wash them> I butcher all my own meat and do about 40 birds a year. I would be interested in making? a duvet or feather bed!

I really enjoyed how respectful to the chicken. I almost teared up for how respectful you are. I specifically liked how you made the chicken relax, then swiftly cut her throat, then quietly coo her. In all honesty, if I was a chicken, I would? want you to kill me. And thereafter eat me. I prefer to be made into chicken soup.

I thought this was a really good video. I am sure that if the corner market was not open, most everyone would be eatting dog, cat, rat, possum etc. What if everyone had rabbits, chickens, and? a small survival garden in their yard? Hopefully not but it may be coming and if it does, the sooner you learn the better.

It was still kind of difficult to see her kill it, but she was extremely gentle and kind. Too bad all chickens can't go? out like this.

I so agree with you. God put things (including meat) here for us to eat, chickens is one of them? according to the bible. I think you did this as humanly possible causing the least amount of pain & stress to both you and the chicken.. According to experts colors effect moods, so the pink may well have validity. Doing your own raising & butchering is so much better then market... Their raised, feed & butchered horribly. Many still alive drown as they hit the hot water baths.

I really appreciate how you handle your birds. I feel the same way; I hunt and raise our own food and it should never be about being 'brutal or macho' but about providing food in? a natural and kind way with modesty and thanks for the life we take. Thank you. But I am curious as to why you drain them and -then- break the neck. Why not the other way around; is there a reason for your method?

Thank you so much for posting these videos on chicken butchering. I've always been of the mind that you can respect animals and still eat them! I have to admit, even though I've done enough butchering? myself, I still tear up, and did while watching you do it too!. :/ I really appreciate your exampling this for the world to see.
